Dog Struggles

Q. My dog pulls on lead, what can I do?

A. This is a very common struggle! First of all read my blog! https://abcdogs.biz/2024/10/28/loose-lead-walking/

There are lots of tips in that, including looking at why your dog is pulling as that is usually where to start. You can then consider one to one coaching with me where I can help you and your dog or you could join a group class where we cover loose lead walking.

Q. My dog doesn’t come back when called, help me!

A. Recall is another common issue. First thing to work on is making sure your dog finds being with you, close to you and interacting with you fun and rewarding. The more they value being near you the more likely they are to return to you.

Main top tip is to reward them when they come back to you – generously. And to practice lots of “easy” recalls when you know they will return.

Coaching and Classes

Q. My dog is reactive to other dogs can they still come to class?

A. Generally yes they can. It is best to discuss with me first so we can ensure it is the right approach for you and your dog. If your dog can Coaching and Classes

Q. My dog is reactive to other dogs can they still come to class?

A. Generally yes they can. It is best to discuss with me first so we can ensure it is the right approach for you and your dog. If your dog can be within 10 metres of another dog then it is usually workable. I make sure in the classes that all dogs are spread out. I will give advice and tips before arriving on how to enter and exit giving all owners and dogs space.

It is also possible to do classes online or consider leaving your dog at home so you can learn and practice at home with them. We can discuss your options. And if after attending a class you think it isn’t the right thing for your dog we can look at transferring you to 1-to-1 sessions.

Q. I am not sure what sort of class is best for you dog?

A. Best thing is to give me a ring/message and we can discuss it.

Q. I have not experienced concept, positive or games based training before and unsure how it works?

A. Happy to talk you through it. I could talk all day about it! The main aim is to train your dog for the situation rather than in the situation. For example, if they are fearful or over excited around other dogs I would advise you limit the access for a period of time while we work on confidence and disengagement concepts. Then as we slowly introduce them into situations with dogs they are better equipped to handle it. The good thing about concept based training is often that by working on one concept your dog’s behaviour will improve in several areas. For example, if you work on proximity both loose lead walking and recall will likely improve.

Q. Can I cancel a session?

A. 1-to-1 sessions can be rearranged if not a regular occurrence. If cancelling altogether then more than 24 hours notice will be required. For classes 48 hours notice will be required otherwise full payment will be needed.

Q. I need to miss a class, what happens?

A. I send recap notes out for all my classes which you can read through. Happy to answer any questions about it before the next class. Most classes will follow up on previous teachings so you will soon catch up.

Q. I would like to have classes with you but I live to far away/am not in Spain

A. It is possible to do online classes on Zoom. This may sound odd for dog training but is very possible. I can teach a bit more theory which sometimes helps and then you can do it with your dog in your own time. I will use my dog to demo the games so you can see how it works.
